A pioneer of homelessness charity Emmaus Merseyside has been awarded an MBE in The New Year Honours list.

Nigel Mellor, Emmaus Merseyside’s longest serving volunteer and trustee, received the MBE for services to homeless and disadvantaged people across Merseyside.

After a successful 30-year career as a local government officer for Liverpool City Council and as Chair of the Merseyside Area Probation Board, Nigel first became involved with Emmaus Merseyside in 2007 in an advisory capacity.

He became Chair of Trustees in 2012, a responsibility he held for 8 years. During his involvement with Emmaus, Nigel has given more than 3,500 hours of voluntary service to the charity, helping Emmaus Merseyside to develop both its residential accommodation and several charitable retail activities in Sefton and Liverpool.

From its purpose-built 28-bedroom community building in Seaforth, Bootle, Emmaus Merseyside now provides a home, training and work opportunities and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness.

Commenting on the award Nigel said: “I have to admit the award came as a complete, but most welcome, surprise. Whilst I have been involved with Emmaus Merseyside for quite a few years, the award recognises the hard work and commitment made by many people, trustees, staff and volunteers alike.”

Emmaus Merseyside supports formerly homeless people by providing a home for as long as someone needs it, meaningful work, training and ongoing individual support. Emmaus operates three charity stores across the city region with all the money raised used to help people out of homelessness.

As well as his involvement with Emmaus Merseyside, Nigel has also provided support, guidance and voluntary assistance to other Merseyside organisations through his role as Chair of Liverpool Community Technical Services Agency (Comtechsa) Ltd and Oaktree Education Trust amongst others.

The community are very proud that Nigel Mellor's generosity has been recognised.
