MOSSLEY HILL: Plans submitted for new mental health hospital

MOSSLEY HILL: Plans submitted for new mental health hospital

Plans for a new mental health hospital in south Liverpool have been submitted again to the city council.

The proposals from Mersey Care for a new hospital building on its existing Mossley Hill site were first put forward in 2017 but were never taken to completion.

Now, the healthcare provider has submitted plans which would see a 106 bed facility built on the site.

Little detail is available on the public documents currently visible on the council’s website, but earlier this year Mersey Care confirmed it was looking to speed up changes at the facility.

That came after patients had to be moved out of a ward in the existing hospital to units as far away as Warrington after flooding.

At the time, a Mersey Care spokeswoman said the flooding had led to renewed effort to speed up the long term plan for the site, which provides care for dementia patients, older people with mental health issues and people with learning disabilities.

The spokeswoman said: “Mossley Hill Hospital is at the forefront of that estates improvement strategy and it was always planned to move our inpatients into modern single room accommodation in the New Year.

“We have now accelerated those plans and will move over to our new sites over the coming weeks to ensure we continue to provide safe and comfortable services for Christmas and beyond. Despite the best efforts of the services and our estates team, we were no longer able to do that at Mossley Hill Hospital.

“This decision has been made in the best interests of the dementia, older people’s, learning disabilities and community mental health patients using those services at Mossley Hill Hospital and we are working very hard to ensure they experience the minimum of disruption during this period.”

Liverpool Council’s planning department will now consider the application.
