NEWS ROUNDUP: Lockdown roadmap & surge testing
Cases of Covid-19 are at their lowest levels for two months as the city region waits to hear details on the way out of lockdown. From their peak on January 8, infections have fallen nearly 90% while more than a quarter of the city region's population has already received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
Surge testing to "understand" the spread of the South African variant of Covid-19 in Southport has now been completed. Tests were taking place in Norwood, Cambridge and Dukes wards, with door-to-door testing kits being delivered, as well as dedicated mobile testing sites being set up.
The Prime Minister has revealed the government’s plan to get life back to normal. Boris Johnson said that English schools will reopen to all pupils on March 8. The Rule of Six will return on March 29, with groups of up to six or two households of a larger size being allowed to meet outdoors. Subsequent stages will see non-essential retail and gyms reopening not before April 12. Pubs and restaurants can also potentially reopen on this date, albeit only for outdoor service.
