FLOOD MANAGEMENT: Willowed leaky dams

Our changing climate and more extreme weather events have increased the number and severity of floods globally as well as closer to home.

Flood risk management is now more important than ever, In St Helens, the almost decade old willowed leaky dams at Sankey Valley Country Park help slow the flow of water upstream of the flood risk area to trap and slow the flow of water.

There are four of these sets of barriers that help flood risk management, together they trap the equivalent of an Olympic sized swimming pool's worth of water, however, the environment agency says whilst this is a great start, realistically more need to be built.

The Environment agency are working alongside The Mersey Forest on this project. Trees and woodlands have a crucial role to play in helping our region adapt to inevitable climate change. Flood risk is reduced thanks to improved surface water management and these up stream interventions.
