LSTM: Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine played a key role in the development of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine.
Hundreds of Liverpool healthcare workers were involved in trials last year as it became one of the 18 sites across the UK to test the vaccine. Pre-pandemic, a lot of work centred around developing better vaccines to protect against pneumonia, one of the largest killers worldwide.
Clinical Fellows work alongside academics at LSTM - These are doctors, usually fully qualified, who take a break from clinical work, or reduce their ward time, in order to get more involved in research.
Due to the expertise of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's Respiratory Clinical Research Group, and working in collaboration with the National Institute of Health Research, the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Well Travelled Clinic, LSTM were selected as one of the UK sites for the University of Oxford's COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial. A total of 1,000 volunteers who supported trial in Liverpool in May 2020.
