NEWS ROUNDUP: Death rate falls & Liverpool Together

Your latest news update for the region

Deaths from Covid-19 fell for the fifth week in a row at the start of March as the virus continues to retreat across the Liverpool City Region. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday show 49 people died of Covid-19 in the city region during the week up to March 5.

Liverpool is set to mark one year since England's first lockdown began with a series of tributes. Tuesday 23 March is being recognised across the country as a day of reflection after such a challenging year.  In the city, a one-minute silence will be observed at midday and immediately after the silence, a special event called Liverpool Together, will be simulcast on radio and online.

A bin lorry caught fire causing delays to collections last week. Wirral Council, which contracts out its waste collection service to Biffa, said the fire was caused by hot ashes being put into a bin. The council said:  "In addition to delays on collections, it took up valuable time from fire crews."
