CALLER REPORT: Council failures found

Government commissioners will be sent to Liverpool City council after a bombshell report from Max Caller highlighted numerous failures of governance at the council.

The government will intervene in the running of Liverpool City Council. Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government says reports he commissioned "paints a deeply concerning picture of mismanagement, breakdown of scrutiny and accountability". Commissioners will be sent to take control of the council's planning, property management, highways and regeneration departments.

The report criticised the council's governance procedures in its planning, regeneration and highways department and warned of a "dysfunctional culture". Commissioners from Whitehall will soon be sent to oversee the council's operations in those three areas for up to three years.

Liverpool City Council released a statement saying it takes the findings the report extremely seriously. Crucially, Government inspector Max Caller has made it clear that he believes the organisation has already taken steps to address the issues, since the arrival of Chief Executive Tony Reeves in 2018.

Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram published a statement calling the report "difficult reading" and offering his support in making changes at the council.

Leader of the Liverpool Lib Dem's Richard Kemp said he worries about the damage this report will have on the reputation of the city
