Parents have been warned after a child was approached by a “man in a blue van” on his way to school.

Shortly before 8am on Wednesday, a 12-year-old boy was approached on Church Road in Seaforth.

The man pulled up alongside the boy in a blue van and asked if he wanted a lift.

When the boy refused, the man is said to have driven alongside the boy and asked him again, before driving away in the direction of Seaforth Road.

The boy was unharmed but distressed, and reported the incident to the police.

Parents and carers of pupils at nearby Sacred Heart Catholic School in Crosby were sent a safeguarding notice yesterday.

Part of the letter reads: “A student from another school was approached by a man in Seaforth this morning (Wednesday).

“He was in a car and asked whether the child wanted a lift. The student declined, the police were called and the child is safe at home.

“Please emphasise with your son or daughter that we will always listen to any concern of this type, regardless of where and when it takes place.”

Merseyside Police has described the man as white, with grey hair slightly receding on top, and stubble on his face.

He was wearing glasses and a black jacket.

Witness and CCTV enquiries have since been carried out, and police are keen to hear from anyone who might have information.

Community Inspector Duncan Swan said: “This incident was understandably concerning for the boy and his family, who did the right thing by getting in touch with us. We would like to speak to the man involved and further our enquiries.
