ADVANTAGE ENGLAND: Robert Lewandowski to sit out Wembley clash

England have been handed a boost ahead of their World Cup Qualifier against Poland as striker Robert Lewandowski is set to miss the game.

The 32-year-old Bayern Munich player limped off against Andorra at the weekend and faces up to 10 days out with ligament damage.

Lewandowski has now left the Poland camp to return to Germany for further treatment on the injury and faces a race to be fit for Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final against PSG.

Poland are considered England’s biggest challenge when it comes to topping Group I, so Gareth Southgate’s side have a chance to put themselves in pole position for qualification.

Team News

As well as Lewandowski’s injury there has been an outbreak of coronavirus within the Poland squad.

Midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak and defender Kamil Piatkowski have tested positive, after Lukasz Skorupski and Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich, tested positive last week.

Krychowiak’s result has been contested and the Polish FA have approached UEFA to request a new test.

All other members of the squad have tested negative and the game will go ahead as scheduled.

England’s Options

Having scored against Albania, midfielder Mason Mount is quickly establishing himself in England’s starting 11.

This comes just months after he received plenty of criticism on social media but Gareth Southgate has often praised the young midfielder:

“"I suppose now [Chelsea manager] Thomas Tuchel picks him probably everybody will agree. When it was Frank [Lampard] it didn't count for some reason but he's an exceptional player.

"He finds space intelligently, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances, and he can score goals.”

Another player looking to get himself back in the starting 11 is the in-form Luke Shaw.

Shaw has had a magnificent season for Manchester United and following an assist for Harry Kane’s goal at the weekend, a start in the summer beckons for the United defender.
