A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP: The magical romance between the Queen and Prince Philip through the years

As we look ahead to the Duke’s funeral as the guest’s list finalised, here’s a look back at the Royal Couple who first stole our hearts.

He was a dashing naval cadet with royal roots and she was a young princess who would one day be queen.

The romance of Prince Philip of Greece and Princess Elizabeth stemmed from a summer encounter at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in 1939.

The future couple, who were distant cousins, had been at the same gatherings on a number of occasions.

But Since then, they maintained a regular correspondence and met on several more occasions.

With Philip invited to spend the Christmas of 1943 with the royal family at Windsor.

Years later and after much speculation about the romance, In July 1947, it was officially announced by Buckingham Palace that Philip was to marry Elizabeth.

Philip had applied for British nationality, renouncing his Greek royal title and adopting the surname of Mountbatten; then known as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.

...and at Westminster Abbey in November 1947, the pair married described at the time

by Winston Churchill as a “flash of colour” in post-war Britain.

Since then - the Philip was always by The Queen’s side - even after stepping back from official royal duties in 2017, and the romance between that young at heart couple continued to capture the nations hearts.

As the Queen herself once said, he was my strength, my stay.

A devoted partnership of 73 years - the Duke’s physical presence might be gone, but it certainly won’t be forgotten...
