A CUT ABOVE: Hairdressers & salons reopen
Shops, hairdressers, pubs and restaurants across our region have been opening their doors this week for the first time in several months.
For many their reopening cannot come soon enough, with some salons reportedly fully booked for the next month. Tranquil Hair and Beauty say their hairdressers have been working long hours to fit clients in.
All personal care facilities such as hair, beauty and nail salons, tattoo parlours, spas, massage parlours, body and skin piercing services, non-medical acupuncture, and tanning salons have been closed since the last national lockdown. Tranquil Hair and Beauty only opened their doors in October during the easing of restrictions.
Boris Johnson has urged the nation to "behave responsibly" as the country takes further steps back to normal life. The Prime Minister himself reportedly took a trip to the barbers this week. Hairdressers and salons have worked hard to ensure they are Covid-safe. Based on evidence these locations have not been major transmission sites for the virus, though they do have strict measures in place including social distancing and avoiding cross contamination with reusable gowns.
Hairdressers and barbers provide so much more than a hair service, they offer an ear to talk to and are essential in making us look and feel good which can have a positive impact on our mental health.
Since the end of March, Covid-19 levels have continued to fall in the city region, reaching just 17 cases per 100,000 people last week, while more than half the population has been vaccinated against the virus.
These factors will give local health bosses hope that deaths will continue to fall as the city region emerges from lockdown.
But the public has been urged not to become complacent and keep following the rules, even if they have been vaccinated, to ensure infection rates do not start rising again.
