ACROSS THE CITY: Aldi store openings could be changing

The way customers shop at six city Aldi stores could be about to change under proposals being considered by Liverpool Council.

The supermarket giant has submitted plans to extend how long some of its shops can open and sell alcohol in a number of shops across the city.

Currently, the six affected stores have licences which allow them to sell alcohol during their opening hours, generally from 8am to 10pm.

However, the new plans would mean that the shops could be open from 6am until midnight and would be able to sell booze for that entire time.

The affected shops are in Dovecot, Gateacre, Old Swan, Everton, Smithdown Road and St John’s in Liverpool city centre.

Liverpool Council will now have to decide on the proposals, with members of the public able to give their views on the council’s website.

The six affected shops are:

  • 401a East Prescot Road, L14 1BL
  • Gateacre Park Drive, L25 1PD
  • Broadgreen Road, L13 5SQ
  • Salop Street, L4 4BZ
  • 281 Smithdown Road, L15 2HP
  • 125 St Georges Way, St Johns Centre, L1 1LY

Earlier today, the supermarket giant announced plans to open seven new shops in Merseyside, the latest part of a significant expansion in recent years.

The budget retailer has confirmed it is now looking for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for development.

Aldi says it is on the lookout for sites that are big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.

The supermarket will also be investing in the development of new and expanded distribution centres.
