A Merseyside Member of Parliament has spoken of the huge support she has had following the death of fellow MP Sir David Amess.

On Saturday, the Conservative MP was stabbed to death while carrying out a constituency surgery in Essex.

Sir David’s death led to an outpouring of tributes, including from Merseyside MPs.

Southport MP Damien Moore paid tribute to his “friend”, whom he says “nothing was ever too much trouble for”.

Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Moore, the only Tory MP in Merseyside, said: “I’m devastated to hear of the death of my colleague and friend Sir David Amess.

“He was a kind and decent man, a hard-working local MP, and an example to many.

“Nothing was ever too much trouble for him, and he would find time for anyone. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and staff at this sad time.

“RIP Sir David.”

Metro Mayor for the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, said: “Shocking, tragic news. My thoughts are with David’s family, friends, colleagues and staff at this awful time.”

Mick Whitley, Labour MP for Birkenhead, said: “I am absolutely devastated to learn of Sir David Amess’ death.

“My thoughts at this terrible time are with his family, many friends, and his staff.”

Last night, Alison McGovern gave an insight into the feedback MPs have been getting following the shocking attack.

Writing on Twitter, the Wirral South MP said: “[I’ve] had so many kind messages on here, via email and in person over the past few days.

“I know we face challenges. But also, people are compassionate and generous. That is the truth #MoreInCommon.”
