INDUSTRIAL SITE: New Brighton apartments planned

Two apartment blocks are set to replace a “noisy” industrial site in Wirral.

Howells DIY is applying for outline planning permission for 12 apartments to the rear of 232-234 Rake Lane in New Brighton.

If approved by Wirral Council, the homes will be formed of one block of nine homes and another block of three.

The “mews style” development will contain one three-bedroom apartment and 11 two-bedroom apartments.

It will also contain parking space for 13 cars, more than one for each home, and spaces for people to park bicycles.

The apartment blocks will replace the current use of the site, which is a DIY retail showroom with a car park, a joinery workshop and a motor vehicle repair and body shop.

The design and access statement attached to the plan argues the proposal can convert a noisy industrial site into a “high quality residential use to the benefit of all concerned”.

On the proposed look of the new apartments, the statement added: “This building has a pitched-roof to the elevation facing the houses on Sandfield Road, giving the appearance of a traditional [two storey] property.

“Relationships between the new buildings and existing neighbouring residential properties have been carefully considered to minimise impact while guaranteeing benefits.”

The developer believes the plan fits in with Wirral Council’s housing strategy and is “exceptionally well-located for all amenities and transport”.

The local authority must now decide whether to approve the proposal.
