NEWS ROUNDUP: Cyclists killed & Active Travel

Your latest news update for the region

A man has been jailed for killing two cyclists after he collided with them in a stolen car on a road in Liverpool. Colin Smith was driving home to a house in Halewood.  It was raining and the road surface was wet. He was seen to be driving over the speed limit on the road which was 40mph.The cyclists, Claire Killey, 45 and Anthony Cope, 39 died from their injuries after the incident in February 2019. Smith, 23 has been sentenced to 11 years.

Staff who work in Liverpool's care homes – who have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19 – are being urged to get their jabs as soon as possible. It follows an announcement that vaccinations are to become compulsory for staff at English care homes for those who provide nursing or personal work for elderly or vulnerable residents. The new proposals include staff employed either full-time or part-time, via an agency or on a voluntary basis, unless they are medically exempt. Any changes would be subject to parliamentary approval and a 16-week grace period, allowing staff who have not yet been vaccinated the opportunity to access their jabs. Planned for October 2021, changes would also cover tradespeople, hairdressers and health care professionals who work onsite; however the new rules would not apply to visitors or staff and volunteers under 18.

Residents across our region are being encouraged to cycle and walk more as studies indicate it could help our high streets thrive. Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, who is leading a campaign to encourage more people to leave their cars at home has pointed to figures which suggest doing so boosts local businesses. Mr Rotheram said such a boost could be vital in helping hard hit businesses across our region in their recovery from the pandemic.
