SUSPECT CONDITION: Staff sent home from BT centre after asbestos find

A BT centre in Sefton has sent staff members home amid concerns over asbestos found in the building in a “suspect condition”.

The Aintree Technical Engineering Centre, at Heysham Road in Bootle will remain closed after up to 40 staff were sent home following the find.

A spokesperson for BT said the telecoms giant is working with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure they are “taking all necessary steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and customers” after the substance, which is highly hazardous to health, was found on October 29.

The BT spokesperson said: “BT has recently become aware of the presence of material containing asbestos found in a suspect condition at its Aintree Technical Engineering Centre near Bootle in Merseyside.

“The site was closed on 29th October 2021 as a precautionary measure, pending further investigation, assessment and appropriate remediation.

“BT has notified the Health and Safety Executive and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and customers.”

BT have also confirmed they are in the process of making contact with people with connections to the site.

The BT spokesperson said: “Our primary focus is to the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and we know that colleagues from other parts of the region use the stores facilities in the building on occasion so we are proactively contacting colleagues from a wider area to make them aware of this matter, including offering them appropriate support and advice.

“The building will only reopen once any investigations and any required remediation is complete.”

BT have also set up a page on their website to provide any additional information and updates regarding the situation.
