VITAL SERVICE: New Birkenhead Post Office set to open

Birkenhead town centre is set to get its Post Office back, after almost half a year without one.
In June, Birkenhead’s Post Office, located in the WH Smith store at 37 Borough Pavement in The Grange shopping centre, closed, leaving Wirral’s biggest town without a Post Office.
When the news broke, Cllr Pat Cleary, who represents Birkenhead and Tranmere on Wirral Council, said it was of “grave concern” to him and worried that it may harm the council’s huge plans for hundreds of homes, a new market and much else besides for the town over the coming years.
But now, a new Post Office is set to open and will be based at a different location, 6 Princes Pavement, also in The Grange precinct.
The site, which used to be a betting office, is currently empty.
Next month, on Thursday, November 11, a Post Office will open at the premises, restoring a vital service to Birkenhead town centre.
This is only a temporary plan, but the Post Office does have an applicant interested in providing a permanent Post Office in the town centre.
Speaking to the LDRS today, Cllr Cleary, who represents the Green Party, said: “It’s good news. I’m very pleased to see that we’ll have a Post Office restored, certainly in time for Christmas, in the town centre.
“I do note it’s a temporary solution and it has not been promoted as a permanent location for a Post Office, so i’m slightly unclear as to the reasons for that, but it obviously does finally demonstrate that the Post Office does have some commitment to the town centre going forward.
“I’m sure on behalf of all residents I can say this is a welcome development.”
The Princes Pavement site will open from Monday-Friday between 9am and 5.30pm, and on Saturday from 9am-12pm.
Karl Haddon, the Post Office’s network provision lead, said: “We are delighted to be restoring Post Office services to central Birkenhead as we know how important a Post Office is to residents and businesses.”
