ENGLAND TRAINING: Jack Grealish training away from squad on Tuesday

ENGLAND TRAINING: Jack Grealish training away from squad on Tuesday

PA - Nick Potts

Jack Grealish was training away from the main England squad on Tuesday as part of an individualised training programme.

Grealish was part of the session on Monday but was conspicuous by his absence on Tuesday, when the Football Association said he was “working away from the group”.

The Press Association reported that the 25-year-old did an individualised programme indoors as he continues to build full fitness after the shin injury that laid him low for three months.

There were 24 members of Gareth Southgate’s squad training at St George’s Park on Tuesday, when Harry Maguire was again involved as he continues to build fitness after ankle ligament damage.

However, United goalkeeper Dean Henderson was absent once more and has in fact had to withdraw from the squad altogether. The FA said Henderson withdrew “with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament” and returns to United for “further assessment and rehabilitation ahead of the 2021/22 season”.

Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will soon be joining up with the group as replacement for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Grealish to play against Scotland?

Grealish did not even get on the pitch against Croatia as Southgate chose to go for Mason Mount in attacking midfield and a strike force of Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

However, many have tipped Southgate to change things up against Scotland and there are high hopes that we may see Grealish get his chance in an international tournament after having put in a number of impressive performances for England this season. A Grealish training video in which he shows off his keepy-uppy skills before firing a volley into the top corner has been shared by the star himself on social media and certainly teases England fans with his talent.

His ease with which he got on the ball and created chances in the warm-up games against Austria and Romania make it easy to forget that he had a shin injury that made him miss the end of the season for his club Aston Villa and that could be a reason for Southgate to leave him out once more, given that he is still on an individualised programme.

England have plenty of other options with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all vying for a place as well.
