MUST WIN: Liverpool chase Champions League football
Liverpool return to action against Newcastle United at the weekend as they continue to battle for Champions League football next season.
Jürgen Klopp’s side conceded a late equaliser against Leeds during the week, but were boosted by Chelsea’s draw against Brighton.
Events off the pitch have proved a distraction in recent days, with Liverpool one of the six clubs involved in the European Super League chaos.
Klopp will be hoping that his players can silence any talk about what is going on behind the scenes by securing all three points at Anfield.
Liverpool may have Curtis Jones back in contention after a three-match absence because of a muscle injury.
Nat Phillips missed Monday nights draw at Leeds with a hamstring strain which is expected to keep him out again.
Steve Bruce has declared Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are both fit following persistent injury problems over the past few weeks.
Liverpool’s home form has been called in to question this season as they endured a six game losing streak on their own patch this year.
However, they are now unbeaten at home in their last three games in all competitions and this included their first home league win of 2021 against Aston Villa and a Champions League victory over RB Leipzig.
To add to an upturn in Liverpool’s form, Newcastle haven’t won at Anfield in the league for 27 years and haven’t beaten Liverpool since December 2015.
